Design Motorola has been famous for its mid-range Moto G series and the eight (G)eneration has spawned five phones already. However, its high black value is noticeable in dark rooms or at night. It is not made for underwater selfies, obviously. Fortunately, the G8 Power does a great job lasting through a long day of heavy usage.

While the device is well built, its large battery makes it rather thick. The phone comes in a single storage configuration of 64GB, which is pitifully low, although par for the course with budget phones, and it can at least be expanded via microSD (up to 512GB). The main camera takes appealing-looking photos, too. The 16MP main shooter feels similar to the one on its predecessor, and takes admirable photos in daylight, with sharp detail both up close and far away in the same shot – more so than the equivalent camera on the Motorola Edge Plus or iPhone 11 Pro Max, based on side-by-side comparisons of photos taken at the same location.

Electronic stabilization is available on all 1080p@30fps options, no matter the type of camera.

When there is no need for HDR, the noise is more, but the colors are natural and true to life. Blast a bit of Better Call Saul through those and you’ll cut through almost any kind of ferocious background noise. While the Moto G8 Plus offered pixel binning tech to brighten up darker pics and help deal with HDR, the G8 Power struggles with tricky lighting. The G8 Power might not meet the standards of the most demanding users, but if you’re looking for a bargain that does all the basics very well, then this is a good bet. It is worth noting that the device is comparatively thick at 10 mm. Android app

The Moto G8 Power release date was originally set to be February 20 in the UK with a release window of ‘spring’ (Q1 2020) in the US, but with the coronavirus outbreak resulting in the cancelation of MWC 2020, at which Motorola was originally planning to unveil the phone, the launch was pushed back. The Moto G8 Power has a 6.4-inch IPS panel that operates natively at 2300x1080 pixels. Unlike in previous years, when Motorola released its full suite of G-series phones at the same time, the company has been shrewder with its rollout of the G8-series phones, doling out a couple at a time in different regions.

This sibling rival offers a significantly bigger battery, as well as a fresh quad lens camera, for a similar cost.

The front-facing 16MP camera works adequately, although it struggles a bit with shadows, lumping colors together and losing sharpness in areas that aren’t directly lit. The ultrawide camera uses an 8MP 1/4.0" sensor with 1.12µm pixels behind f/2.2 13mm lens.

Colours are naturalistic and accurate rather than overblown, and detail is decent though not great.

Bath The G8 Power was finally released in the US and other countries on April 30, 2020. The thinner bezels are what really make the G8 Power look more refined than its price tag would suggest, facilitating a 85.1% screen-to-body ratio, a clear upgrade over the G7 Power’s 77.1%. A single LED flash is around, if you ever need it. On the other hand, the G8 Power’s LCD screen doesn’t have as warm a tint to it as the OLED screens we’ve compared it to.

Compare Quick verdict If you're shopping on a budget: the Moto G8 Power is the class-leading affordable phone with an immense battery. As I have, several times. LCD lacks the contrast of an AMOLED and doesn’t have HDR support either, so colours don’t “pop” out of the screen in the same pleasing manner as AMOLED counterparts.

At least with such a big battery, it’s unlikely to be very run down by the end of the day. In short, the Moto G8 Power is well suited for general navigation tasks. Battery Portraits are possible with the selfie camera and they aren't bad - the subject separation isn't perfect but the algorithm masks this with blur and the results are good. You might be best off leaving it to charge overnight.
